The key idea
Use AI as a helpful assistant—not an unquestioned authority.
AI can give you a useful first draft, a clear explanation, ideas, or questions to ask. But it can make mistakes, leave out important details, or provide information that is no longer current. Your experience and judgment remain essential.
2. Check
Verify important information with an official source, such as your doctor, pharmacist, bank, insurance provider, government agency, or a qualified professional.
3. Decide
Use your values, common sense, and life experience. AI can offer options, but it cannot make your decision for you.
Privacy reminder
Keep personal information private.
Do not enter passwords, Social Security numbers, bank-account or credit-card numbers, medical-record numbers, insurance identification numbers, or another person’s private information into an AI chat.
If you need help with a letter or a form, remove identifying details first. Ask AI for a template, checklist, or plain-language explanation rather than pasting private documents.
Safer example prompt: “I received a letter from my insurance company about a coverage change. Please create a checklist of questions I should ask when I call the company. Do not tell me what decision to make.”
